ASSIGNMENT

Redesigning Of Chess Pieces

  • HISTORY OF CHESS AND MY RESEARCH

Chess was invented by SISA in 6th Century AD in Gupta Empire of India — the game was known as Chaturanga. Several variations of chess evolved in Persia. Chess is one of the most complex games ever invented. It requires application of strategy and tactics together, a feat which is beyond the capability of most. When the inventor of the game showed it to the emperor of India, the emperor was so impressed by the new game that he said to the man“Name your reward!” The man responded: Give me one grain of rice for the first square of the chessboard, two grains for the next square, four for the next, eight for the next and so on for all 64 squares, with each square having double the number of grains as the square before. “The emperor agreed, amazed that the man had asked for such a small reward - or so he thought. After a week, his treasurer came back and informed him that the reward would add up to an astronomical sum, far greater than all the rice that could conceivably be produced in many centuries! At the end it was discovered that it’s not possible to fill all of the boxes as it was about 18 billion billion rice. So if a bag of rice contained a billion grains, you would need 18 billion such bags. Whereas a real bag of rice weighing 100 pounds has less than 3 million grains.

  • MY CONCEPT
I actually designed the chess in which I tried to change the basic design of chess. I have changed the visual appearance of all the pieces on the chess board, as all the pieces of one side are of same size, shape and color so the pieces can’t be identified with the visual sense, another sense is involved in my concept which is smelling sense all the pieces are filled with different fragrances and could only be recognized by those different fragrances. One who want to play the chess have to remember its own pieces and the pieces of opponent with the difference of fragrances. All the other rules of the game are same as existed.
·     Process of all the assignment
As I have written all of my concept above now I’ll mention all the process from which I get the required result of the chess pieces. I started from the sketches and drawn different shape, my aim was to make a shape which cover a small space on the chess board where it has a capacity to fill fragrance in its core. I was asked to make the three different types of pieces one from throwing, one from 3D laser printing and one from the molding casting technique. After finalizing my sketches I started from the throwing 50 pieces of selected shape then I throw another shape which I have to cast, after making five molds I took 50 casts from those molds and go through the process of neating those casts .following the same process I took casts of that printed shape. After completing my all basic shapes and neating it I fired my pieces in kiln, for completing those pieces I made wholes or opening for inserting the fragrances in it. Then I made my chess board with help of model making sheets by following the diameter of my pieces. For finalizing my pieces I glazed all of them and colored them and fired them again, by doing this I came to end and made my caps with the help of common pins and beeds, I bought the different fragrances and pour them separately in each piece with the help of the syringe and this is how completed my all work of assignment.

    • My experience regarding assignment

The assignment was designed by the Hod of Ceramic department of National College of arts. The assignment was very much interesting and I learned many things with the flow of term, I learned to play the chess which is the most interesting and worthy game I have ever played in my life. I have also go through the history of this game which is really amazing, I heeded upon all the designs of chess which changes with the evolution of time.it seems to me that this is the only game which has a such powerful  and artistic background. Many popular artists in the history have worked on the chess in ceramics, one of the most renowned artist is Marcel Duchamp. Another thing which I enjoyed most in this assignment was the exploration of different mediums and equipment. No doubt my concept was slightly enigmatic but it was the best assignment I have ever done, these are not only words, these are the sentiments from the core of my heart.
